πΉ Writer’s POV πΉ
With no evidence that linked Kevin to Sonia’s death, Andrew then focuses his attention on the second murder victim which was Ty. Despite checking the deceased’s house once for clues, Andrew was determined to give it another try and see if he could find something this time.
Presently here on the premises of Ty’s house, Andrew walks around the house first before going inside to begin his investigation.Ty’s property which was still in the house was yet to be packed due to the ongoing investigation. As Andrew enters the house, he realizes that place has been trashed and messed up and after a close observation, Andrew realizes that one of the windows of the house has been broken.
Seeing that the place has been comprised, Andrew leaves the house and immediately he comes out, he spots a matured woman peeking at him from the porch of her house. He had seen her once before and that was the first he first began his investigation on Ty’s murder. Andrew ignores her at first but then his instincts begin to tell him that the woman might know something and after some thought, Andrew approaches the woman.
.
Andrew β‘ Madam, good morning o.
.
Woman β‘ Good morning bros.. Wetin you want?
.
Andrew β‘ You know the person wey dey live inside the house I just commot from?
.
Woman β‘ Eh so? No be him dey kill weeks ago.
.
Andrew β‘ You know anything where happen for him house? E be like say somebody don enter am.
.
Woman β‘ Bros, I no dey talk. Abeg dey go.
.
Andrew β‘ Madam, Please.
.
Woman β‘ I say dey go jare. I no know anything.
.
Seeing that the woman wouldn’t be reasoned with, Andrew decides to use another means to get her to talk. In that moment, he brings out his wallet and counts 3k and then hands it over to the woman who’s eyes pop as she saw the crispy notes. Like a thief on a heist, the woman snatches it from Andrew and quickly tucks it inside her wrapper.
.
Andrew β‘ Oya, Madam talk. You know anything wey happen for this house?
.
Woman β‘ Well, someone enter this house yesterday night around 11:30 and besides this no be the first time he enter the house.
.
Andrew β‘ Wetin you mean?
.
Woman β‘ Oga, I no want talk much but all I know be say, the first time I see the guy na the night wey Ty die.
.
Andrew β‘ How the guy come take be? You go fit describe am?
.
Woman β‘ The guy skinny and him fast like gutter rat.
.
Andrew β‘ So the night you first see the guy.. He come with car?
.
Woman β‘ No.. The person wey come with car that night na fit person o. He look strong and he dey eat better. No be him o.
.
Andrew β‘ So this skinny guy come after the guy with car don leave?
.
Woman β‘ Yes o and him tay for the house.
.
Andrew β‘ How come you never talk the day police come dey investigate?
.
Woman β‘ Why I go talk? E no concern me. They never ask me so I keep my mouth shut and besides Ty na stupid man. Nobody like am for this area. Na God give am wetin he deserves, he think say he go continue to sleep with women without consequences.
.
Andrew β‘ This guy wey tay for Ty’s house, you go fit recognize him face?
.
Woman β‘ No.. The rat cover him face.
.
Andrew β‘ Thank you.
.
Woman β‘ No thank me and no come back here again. This conversation wey we do never happen.
.
Andrew β‘ No worry, you no go see me again.
.
After that, Andrew takes his leave and then enters his car. In that moment, he brings out his phone and then plays the recording of his conversation with the woman which he did in secret without her knowing. As soon as he was done listening to the recording, Andrew starts his car and drives away.
Meanwhile here in Racheal’s office, she and Desmond discuss about the end result of Andrew’s investigation and the possible release of Kevin. Desmond who wasn’t pleased with this scoffs at Racheal’s statement claiming to her that it’s not over.
.
Rachael β‘ There’s still time for you and your clients to back away from this before we get to court. Detective Andrew’s investigation is a dead end, Kevin is innocent and he will go free.
.
Desmond β‘ Don’t be absurd. This isn’t over. Your client is guilty and he will hang.
.
Rachael β‘ Believe me, he won’t. As a professional courtesy, I’m just sparing you the embarrassment in court cause from what I’m seeing, you have nothing on my client.
.
Desmond β‘ Don’t forget about the other victim. Your client assaulted him and might have killed him.
.
Rachael β‘ That miserable dog. Yes, my client assaulted him but he didn’t kill him. There was no blood of the victim on my clients clothes. A gruesome murder like that couldn’t be carried without getting stained. The court may charge for assault but they’re never going to convict my client. He’s clean as a paper.
.
In that moment, Andrew appears into Racheal’s office surprising both her and Desmond with his swift and sudden entry. After taking his seat on one of Racheal’s chairs, Andrew brings out his phone and places it on her table.
.
Rachael β‘ Detective, what’s going on?
.
Andrew β‘ I think we’ve found our killer. Kevin is innocent.
.
Rachael β‘ Did you find something?
.
Desmond β‘ What are you saying detective?
.
Andrew β‘ I’m saying that Kevin is innocent. He’s not the killer.
.
Rachael β‘ Do you have proof?
.
Andrew β‘ Sort of but let me elaborate.
.
As briefly as he can, Andrew narrates everything to Racheal and Desmond about his conversation with the late Ty’s neighbor after which he plays his recording for them to hear . Both attorneys listen with rapt attention but just as the recording was about to finish playing, Desmond interrupts claiming his story to be nothing but fabrications.
.
Desmond β‘ This is absolute trash. It won’t sell in court and besides, who’s to say that the detective isn’t making all of this up?
.
Rachael β‘ I beg your pardon?
.
Andrew β‘ You’re calling me a liar?
.
Desmond β‘ Or a collaborator? Who knows how much you’ve been paid by the client’s family to sabotage this investigation.
.
Andrew β‘ (laughs) Look at this fool. If anyone should be accused of trying to sabotage this investigation it’s your clients.
.
Desmond β‘ What are you talking about?
.
Andrew β‘ One of your clients tried to buy me off. She wanted me to plant evidence against the suspect. I could have arrested her for bribery but I didn’t. Don’t make me say this in court or else.
.
Racheal β‘ Give it up Desmond, the fate of this case has already been decided. Defending this case in court will be mockery of your career. Any lawyer worth his salt should know that this case is already won.
.
Desmond β‘ What do I tell my clients?
.
Rachael β‘ How about this? Let’s set up a meeting with your client’s family and mine so that we can discuss a better solution for this. It would be bad for them if they lost this case considering the heat they’re getting from the public. The public harassment and humiliation is already out of hand. So what do you say?
.
Desmond β‘ Alright, I’ll talk to them.
.
Rachael β‘ Good. If they agree. Let’s meet here in my office within 48hrs before the court hearing.
*
24hrs later, the families of both Kevin and his deceased wife showed up as planned to discuss about finding a solution for this case. Sonia’s sisters who were not satisfied with this arrangement wanted to show their objections but thanks to the presence of their father, they decided to behave themselves. As soon as everyone was seated and calm, Racheal begins to address them all.
.
Racheal β‘ Good morning everyone for coming here. I know this is inconvenient for some of you but this won’t take long. The reason why I arranged for this meeting is because….
.
Rita β‘ Desmond told us why you invited us here and do you honestly think that we would agree?
.
Jonathan β‘ Rita, keep quiet.
.
Rita β‘ NO! I won’t let that murderer go Scott free.
.
Angela β‘ (chuckles) Which murderer? Are you talking about my son? Better watch your mouth or else I’ll show you pepper! Your w***e of a daughter is the reason why we’re all here. If she wasn’t an ungrateful cheat, none of this would have happened.
.
Andrew β‘ Aunty calm down.
.
Rachael β‘ Please calm down everyone. Mrs. Jonathan, I’m sorry for your loss but my client is not the killer. The detective investigating the case found no evidence linking Kevin to the murder and I have a recording from a witness who claimed that your daughter’s lover was killed by someone else. I believe whoever that person is, he’s the one that killed your daughter.
.
Denise β‘ But I saw Kevin standing over her.
.
Rachael β‘ Ms. Denise.. Did you see him covered in blood?
.
Denise β‘ No.
.
Racheal β‘ Did you see my client with any kind of weapon in hand?
.
Denise β‘ No..
.
Rachael β‘ So you see… My client is innocent and there is no evidence against him. Going to trial with this will only be more embarrassing for you but we can all avoid that if you agree to drop the case.
.
Judith β‘ This is absurd. We won’t allow this.
.
Rachael β‘ Honestly, I don’t really care. All I know is if we go to court, you will definitely lose. All I’m trying to do is save you from more public humiliation.
.
Rita β‘ What nonsense!?
.
Desmond β‘ Mrs. Jonathan please..
.
Rita β‘ Don’t talk to me.. Who knows whether you’ve been brought by them? How much did they pay you huh?
.
Rachael β‘ Mrs. Jonathan, I’d better watch my mouth if I were you. If anyone is to blame for bribery it’s your daughters. They tried to buy off the detective investigating this case and if he testifies to this in court, your family is finished.
.
Jonathan β‘ Denise?! Is this true?
.
Denise β‘ (silence)
.
Jonathan β‘ Alright barrister. We’ll drop the case.
.
Rita and daughters β‘ WHAT?
.
Jonathan β‘ Shut your mouths. You all have brought us enough shame already. Our family’s name has already been dragged through the mud already and the last I need is being laughed at for losing this case for falsely accusing my ex son-in-law for murder. Enough is enough.
.
Rachael β‘ Alright then, it is agreed. See us all in court in the next 24hrs.

π KEVIN π
Everything felt like a dream in the courtroom as I sat alongside Racheal my attorney. The whole court session didn’t last up to 20mins before it ended and what surprised me even the more was the outcome.
Hearing these words * Case dismissed and you’re free to go * made so excited and happy that I felt dizzy. At last, I’m free and once again I’m a free man. There was no better feeling like the one I felt in that moment. Although my life isn’t going to be the same now that I’ve gained my freedom, I really didn’t care much about it. The life I lived before I got arrested was a lie and farce anyway and now that now that I’ve gotten another ticket to freedom, I’m going to start afresh and put my past behind me. After the court trial, I was back to the station where I was processed out for about an hour before I was finally released. Inspector Sani, my neighbor congratulated me on my freedom and showed me the way out which I didn’t really need by the way.
Upon arriving outside the station, my mom’s car was already waiting for me. I had to stand for a while and inhale the polluted air before I got into the car. The smell of prison is a poison in it’s own right. After I entered the car and was driven off into the busy road, I sat comfortably beside my mom and cousin who were full of smiles. My sister too was there and her presence surprised me a lot.
.
Kevin β‘ Olivia! Why are you here?
.
Olivia β‘ Only to come and see the damage that the police cell has done to you.
.
Kevin β‘ You’re cruel. Didn’t you here about my situation? Why didn’t you come?
.
Angela β‘ Because I told her not to.
.
Kevin β‘ Why?
.
Angela β‘ I told you that I would get you out and I did.
.
Andrew β‘ So what are you going to do now?
.
Kevin β‘ I really don’t know but for now. I would like to freshen up, eat and rest.
.
Angela β‘ Don’t worry my son. That will be taken care of.
.
Olivia β‘ What a turn of events. I hope that bitch burns in hell.
.
Angela β‘ She is already. She thinks she can cheat on my son for 15yrs and get away with it.
.
Kevin β‘ Mom, what are you saying?
.
Olivia β‘ What she’s saying is that your ex-wife deserved what she got. Whoever pulled that trigger will always have my admiration.
.
Kevin β‘ Let’s forget about this conversation. Sonia is no more and I don’t ever want to think about her ever again.
.
Olivia β‘ Well, now that you’re a free man, how about rekindling things with Kate? I heard you spent the night in her house before you got arrested.
.
Kevin β‘ That’s none of your business.
.
Olivia β‘ You didn’t make the right choice before and now you still have the chance. Don’t waste it.
.
Andrew β‘ You should give her a call and let her know you’re out.
.
Kevin β‘ Don’t worry, I have a better idea in mind.
.
