I DIDN’T KILL BAAMI
Episode 8
“Kemi, why did you stay long”.
Baami’s voice startled me.
“I…I…I..”
My God.
I was so scared. What if he finds out?
If what that woman said is true, then I’m ready to break free from this bondage.
I turned my stammering into sobs.
“Baami….Bisola… she’s dead”. I increased the intensity of my tears. “I had to stay back to console her husband”. I added.
“Console who? That fool that disrespected me.”
“Ahah Baami, is that what you can say. You just lost a daughter.”
“And who said she’s the only daughter I have. What do you expect me to do? Cry?”
“What if I die too, Baami?”. I asked to hear his response.
“We’ll all die one day, Kemi.”
Really? Wow. Probably that woman was right. Probably I have every reason to believe her now.
“Baami, I miss mama. Can I sleep in her room tonight?”
“No. Go into your room. I need to rest. I have a feeling that something is not right.”
I left for my room. Quickly texted Bisola’s husband that he should tell mama that I’m in.
A text popped up almost immediately. From mama.
“You have to come to the hospital, immediately.”
But I just came back?
It sounded urgent so I have to find a way out.
I met Baami sleeping on the couch. He kept shifting uncomfortably. I knew something was wrong.
I was almost at the door when Baami called out to me..
“Kemi, please help me get into that room and bring me the first statue you find in that cupboard.”
Is he really sending me into that same room he forbade me from entering.
Why didn’t he do it himself?
Then I noticed he couldn’t stand.
I stood still, not moving.
“Kemi you have to be fast. Why are you still standing? Or do you want to die too”
“Who’s going to die? You or me?” I asked.
He looked surprised.
“Is there anything you’re not telling me, Kemi”.
“No, Baami I should be asking you that.” I replied Baami, surprised at my boldness. Even if I die, I die happy knowing the truth.
“Kemi, what happened at the hospital?”
“I met my MOTHER the one whom you turned into a mad woman.”
I saw the vivid shock on his face.
He tried to reach out to me. His face looked as if it will burst open anytime.
“But not to worry, I’ll get you the first statue I find”. I hurried into the room and opened the cupboard. I found a big statue standing very far from the others.
I quickly found a rope and tied it around the statue. I made sure it was tight enough and I carried it out to meet Baami.
“Ke..mi..WHY?”..
“Probably if you had treated us right, just probably..you killed my brothers. Why? Because you didn’t have one?. I wish you could die a painful slow death”
“But Kemi..” He holds his neck and coughs.
“This is the statue you asked for. Come and take it if you direly need it. I’ll be home with my mother soon. Nemesis is yet to catch up with you, Baami.
I said and the statue very far from his reach as I left for the hospital.
