From Housemaid to Oga’s Wife Episode 5
Nnena was worried. It had been five days since she was supposed to see her period, but nothing came. At first, she thought it was stress. She had been working, meeting Martins in the hotel, and managing her new apartment. But now, she was worried. Her body was acting strange. She felt tired all the time, her appetite had changed, and she had been sleeping too much. Something was definitely not right.
She walked slowly to her bathroom cabinet and brought out a small white box. It was a pregnancy test kit she bought earlier in the day. She had never used one before, and her hands felt cold as she tore the pack open. She followed the instructions carefully. After a few minutes, she looked at the strip. Two red lines appeared. She stared at it for a long time. “What does two lines mean again?” she asked herself aloud, though she already knew the answer. She dropped the test on the sink and sat on the toilet seat, lost in thought.
“No… this can’t be true,” she whispered. She carried the strip again and looked at it like it would change. But the result was still there—positive. She felt like running out of the room. Her chest felt heavy. “I need to be sure,” she said and picked up her phone. She booked an appointment at a small hospital not far from her house. She needed a proper test to confirm what she was seeing. She couldn’t depend on just one home test. Not for something like this.
The next morning, she went to the hospital. The nurse took her blood and told her to wait. Every minute felt like one hour. When the result finally came out, the nurse handed her the paper with a smile. “Congratulations,” the nurse said. “You’re pregnant. About five weeks gone.” Nnenna forced a smile and walked out. Her head was full of thoughts. She didn’t even hear the okada man greeting her on the road. She entered a tricycle and went home quietly, holding the result paper in her handbag like it was a dangerous secret.
That evening, Martins came to her house as usual. He was in high spirits. He k.issed her cheek and dropped a nylon bag on the table. “I bought some food. I know you don’t like cooking when you’re tired,” he said and laughed. But Nnenna wasn’t smiling. She sat down and folded her arms. Martins noticed her mood. “What’s wrong? You’re not happy to see me?” he asked. “Martins,” she said slowly, “I have something to tell you.” He looked at her face and stopped laughing. “Talk to me. What happened?”
She reached into her bag and brought out the paper from the hospital. She handed it to him without saying anything. Martins looked confused. “What’s this?” he asked as he opened it. His eyes scanned the words. When he got to the part that said “pregnancy confirmed,” he froze. Then he looked at her. “You’re pregnant?” he asked. She nodded slowly. “Yes. It’s yours,” she added. Martins dropped the paper on the table and stood up. He started pacing the room. Nnenna watched him. Her hands were on her laps.
Martins suddenly turned and faced her. “You’re sure?” he asked. “You’re very sure?” She nodded. “I did a test at home, then went to the hospital to be sure. I didn’t want to lie to you.” Martins walked closer to her.
“Are you angry about it?” she asked in a quiet voice. Martins knelt in front of her and held her hands. “Angry? Why would I be angry? This is the best news I’ve heard this year,” he said. “You don’t understand how happy I am. You’re carrying my child, Nnenna.”
She looked into his eyes. “So you’re not mad at me?” she asked. “Why would I be mad at you?” he replied. “We love each other. We’ve been doing this with our hearts. I knew this day would come. And I’m ready for it.” She smiled for the first time since morning. “I was scared you would say I should remove it,” she said. Martins shook his head.
“Never. That’s my child. I will never ask you to do that. You have done nothing wrong. In fact, you’ve made me proud.”
He stood up and pulled her up gently. “We need to start planning,” he said. “This changes everything, but it doesn’t change my love for you. I already told you, Jessica is not my wife in my heart. You are. And this baby is our blessing.” Nnenna leaned her head on his shoulder. “Thank you for not making me feel like a fool,” she whispered.
“You’re not a fool, Nnenna. You’re the only person who truly understands me.” He k.issed her forehead and held her close.
After some time, she pulled away and looked at him. “What about Jessica?” she asked. “She’ll find out one day.” Martins nodded slowly. “Yes, she will. But not now. We have to plan things. I’m working on something. Just give me time. I won’t let her hurt you. And I will never deny you or this child.”
Nnenna sighed. “Alright. I trust you.” Martins smiled and rubbed her stomach lightly. “There’s a small life in there. Our baby. This child is coming for a reason. Maybe it’s time for things to change.”
Nnenna placed her hand over his. “It still feels strange,” she said. “I didn’t expect this to happen so soon.”
Martins replied, “Sometimes life brings good surprises. You just have to accept it and make the best out of it.” They sat together on the small couch in her sitting room. The food Martins brought was forgotten on the table. Their minds were on something more important now. A new chapter had just opened in their lives, and neither of them knew what would happen next.
The secret they had been hiding was no longer just about sneaking into each other’s arms. Now, a baby was involved. That meant more lies, more hiding, and more danger. Martins looked at Nnenna’s face. “No matter what happens, I will always be here for you,” he said. She smiled again, and for the first time in days, her heart was calm. Martins k.issed her gently and held her tight. The road ahead was going to be rough, but at least, they would walk it together.
