DISTANCE AND DESIRE
EPISODE 4
(Ivy’s parents’ room)
Ivy’s mom: I think we’ve been too strict with our daughter and her sisters, that’s why Ivy couldn’t confide in us about seeing a boy.
Ivy’s dad: Yes, our daughter is 25 years old. We were supposed to guide her, not be so strict. We just have to support her now because we failed her too.
Ivy’s mom: Thank you honey, for understanding. Let’s treat her well from now on, so she know she’s not alone.
Ivy’s dad: We’ll talk to her in the morning.
(Ivy’s room)
Her elder brother, Frank, came to see her.
Frank: Ivy, how are you and the baby doing?
Ivy: We’re fine.
Frank: I’m sorry for being so harsh with you these past months. Please forgive me.
Ivy: I’m not angry. I should be the one apologizing for disgracing you all.
Frank: Just stay safe. We’ll talk in the morning.
Ivy: Goodnight.
Frank: Goodnight too.
That night, Ivy tried sewing her torn dress with a needle and thread. The thread slipped from her hand and rolled under the bed. While trying to retrieve it, she noticed her jotter with Daniel’s address written in it under her bed
She quickly grabbed the jotter and ran to her older brother, Frank. Ivy told Frank she found Daniel’s address. Together, they went to their parents’ room to share the news. Frank suggested that they go to Daniel’s place the next morning, which their parents agreed to.
That night, Ivy felt time was crawling. She hoped morning would come quickly so she could see Daniel. She had a lot of questions for him.
The next morning, Frank and Ivy went to Daniel’s place. They arrived in the evening.
When they found Daniel’s house, the guard tried to stop Frank from going in. But Frank pushed past and went inside with Ivy, who is pregnant.
Frank knocked loudly on Daniel’s door. When a lady named Madam Edith answered, Frank barged in, angry and looking for Daniel. Where is that Daniel that got Ivy pregnant and then left her.
Madam Edith didn’t know who Frank and Ivy were. Frank introduced themselves and told her what happened. He accused Daniel of leaving Ivy alone with a baby on the way.
Daniel hearing the noise, looking confused, came downstairs. Ivy tried to talk to him, but he didn’t seem to remember her.
Madam Edith asked Daniel to go back upstairs and rest because he had been sick for a long time and had trouble remembering things.
Madam Edith wasn’t sure if Ivy’s story was true. She asked for proof to know if Ivy knew Daniel, saying that sometimes people lie to get money from wealthy families like hers.
Ivy said, “Ma, I have evidence,” showing Madam Edith various photos they had taken together on her phone.
Madam Edith replied, “Part of me wants to believe you, but Daniel never mentioned anything about you.”
Frank shouted, “Madam, my sister doesn’t lie. Daniel should come and do the necessary things to officially marry her and remove the shame from her.”
“I’m leaving her here; she is your responsibility now,” Frank told Ivy before leaving, promising to keep in touch with her via phone.
Madam Edith told Ivy, “I’ll allow you to stay here on one condition: don’t remind my son of anything. He’s my only child, and the doctor warned against him being reminded of his past as it could affect his health. I’m only allowing you to stay because I don’t want to do any injustice to the child in your womb. If it turns out to be my grandchild, I’ll accept it; otherwise, I’ll kick both of you out.”
Madam Edith gave Ivy a room downstairs, and she stayed there, crying throughout the evening, she though Daniel abandoned her all this while, unaware he was fighting for his life in the hospital.
In Daniel’s room, he was restless, pondering Ivy’s claim of been pregnant for him and her familiar face. He decided to call Lily for advice.
“Babe, where are you?” Daniel asked Lily.
Lily, with fake tears, replied, “My parents’ house is on fire; I’m there.”
Daniel sympathized with her and assured her he would help rebuild. Lily thanked him and mentioned she would return in two days.
After the call, Lily and her boyfriend laughed, excited about their newfound opportunity. “We’ve hit the jackpot again. Daniel is our money machine. I missed him, but I’m glad we’re back to finish his money,” Lily said gleefully.
