The coughing session continued for some minutes that I had to drop my phone on my bed and I was looking for water. I drank the first glass of water and it appeared like nothing was improving, I made up my mind instantly and prepared myself to meet my creator. The only thoughts on my mind was that the oath I had with Bimpe had started backfiring at me, I took the second glass of water and I felt a little bit relieved, I had more cup of water until I was fully relaxed. All through the moment of coughing, Segun was calling my phone repeatedly and I wasn’t picking up, I was seriously sweating like someone awaiting a court’s judgement. I later picked up his call when I was fully relaxed, he asked me why I wasn’t responding online and I told him that I had a serious cough like I was going to die. He laughed at me saying “you already have the thoughts of death on your mind and that was why death was hunting you. Free your mind from death and symptoms of death will free you”. We laughed over it and I joined him back online.
we continued with our discussion and he told me not to call her for now and patiently wait for Bimpe to put her house in order first, that I should get close to her and stylishly pet her to sneak into the room where the blood test results was kept and tell her to retrieve my own test result and trash it. I told Segun that I was scared of Bimpe mentioning my name to Henry as the father of Daniella probably after serious drilling and divorce threats, Segun assured me that something of such can’t happen. “Onihaxy, Bimpe has a lot to lose if she indict you into this matter, you are not as rich as Henry, so why will she implicate herself and subject herself to ejection from Henry’s House?, the Bimpe that I know is very smart to handle everything on her own”.
Segun then pressurized me to tell him about the season two that I told him about earlier, I stylishly avoid the question but he would never give up, he continued to bring it up again and I had to promise him that I will tell him every detail later as soon as the problem at hand is resolved. We had more conversations about Betty and Benita for some minutes until we ended the chat. Before we end the chat, Segun warned me again not to make any attempt of saying it out to any mortal soul including him. He said the reason why I probably escaped death was because we talked about it on a chat and the gods haven’t upgraded their server to the present computer age to detect violations on social media and that was why our discussions and conversations was encrypted. I laughed out so loudly as the conversation ended.

With so much joy and relief in my heart, I prepared for Monday’s work. I arrived at work the next day and everywhere look scanty; the project staffs didn’t come to work since their contract had ended. We had a general team-heads meeting that morning where Funmi and other senior officials of the bank appreciated us for a good job well-done during the period of the project. They also charged us to keep up the spirit even as we would be going back to our previous offices and resuming our previous job roles before the project. I noticed that Funmi was extraordinarily happy that morning, it was all written over her face as her facial look and mood was so different, even her dressing was so hot and unique.
I arranged with some cleaners and we moved my table and systems back to Funmi’s floor and returned to my previous space. Funmi was still in a meeting with the Managers of the bank as at the time of resuming back to my office. Immediately the cleaners left the office, my old friends “the gossip crew” pounced on me as usual.
“OnihaxyOnihaxy!!!!!”
“ we know that you will definitely come back”
“ you and your sugar mummy can never leave each other alone”
“ we are even sure that you aren’t comfortable throughout the project period”
“ you must have missed this place so much”
“ ehn ehn, that reminds me, how far with your wife Benita?”
“ we heard that she wasn’t still retained after the second project?”
“ wetin happen na Onihaxy?”
“ why didn’t you influence her retention na?”
“ after all, it was your mama that was in charge of insourcing?”
“ so, you just ate the girl’s pomo and dumped her?”
“ na wa for the guys in this bank ooooo”
I was just laughing out loudly as they were talking and asking questions, honestly, I have missed this crew so much. While we were still having discussions, Benita called my phone, she reminded me of the job lobby and begged me to help her talk to Funmi if she could still find somewhere to fix her into, she was seriously begging me on phone and she promised to worship me for the rest of her life if I could help her with the job fixing. I told her that I will try my best and we ended the call. It was as if the gossip crew were waiting for me to end the call, they immediately pounced on me again.
“ I heard you saying ‘Hello Benita’”
“ chaii, Onihaxy. You see your life!!!!”
“ you should have helped this girl now”
we were still on the discussion when the main door was opened, Funmi entered in to main office and she was walking into her office and everywhere was immediately silent, even the sound of a pin could be heard at that period, everyone started staring at the system, pressing keyboard and forming busy. Funmi walked towards my table and said “Hi Onihaxy, see me in my office right away”.
Funmi left my table and walked into her office while I was looking her in a surprised mood, immediately she entered her office and I turned my head around, I realized that everybody on the floor was looking at me in a pitiful way, some were shaking head and from the look of things, it appeared like I was in trouble. I cleared my table and saved my work on the system, I pushed my chair backward and stood up while my leg was shaking, I stood up and I was thinking about what could have happened and why Funmi wanted to see me.
“ She was just coming from a management meeting?”
“ she entered and didn’t smile”
“ she just said ‘Hi Onihaxy’”
“ and the next thing was ‘see me in my office right away’”
“ not even during break time as usual?”
“ what could have happened at the management meeting?”
“ was my name mentioned at the meeting?”
“ or was any error detected from my team work?”
“ or was it from my personal work?”
“ or did someone report me?”
“ what have I done wrong this time?”
I left my desk, walked towards her door and knocked twice until she told me to come in. I entered her office and she offered me a seat. I sat down and I was looking so confused and uncomfortable as several thoughts was running through my mind, the look on her face wasn’t helping matters either as she first ignored me and concentrated on what she was typing on the system. After about five minutes, she closed her laptop and looked into my eyes.
FUNMI: Onihaxy, why did you lie to me?
ME: **scared*** Me?, I have never lied to you. What did I do?
FUNMI: **Adjusted her seat** so, you are asking me what you did?
ME: ***stammering** yes Funmi. I don’t know what and where I have went wrong.
FUNMI: when exactly did you and Adeola started dating?
ME: me?, Adeola?, I have told you before. Adeola is more like my sister and I don’t have a single feeling for her.
FUNMI: stop lying Onihaxy.
ME: I swear to God Funmi, there is nothing going on between us.
FUNMI: ok, I just discovered that she had been coming to pass the night at your house.
ME: haaaa. Night kee?, except for the day I came for your sister’s birthday party, Adeola and I have never seen at any time beyond 6pm.
FUNMI: Onihaxy, are you still insisting that there is nothing going on between the two of you?
ME: yes Funmilayo, I mean it.
FUNMI: ok, she came home last night and she was complaining that she had a stomach upset. I took her to the estate clinic same last night for treatment.
ME: eeyah, so sorry about that. How is she now?, hope she is getting better?
FUNMI: ** ignored me*** several tests were conducted and the result of the test showed that she is three weeks pregnant.
ME: ***shocked*** pregnant?, that young girl?, how come?
FUNMI: you are asking me how come?, when both of you were having things together, you never knew it will lead to this?
ME: haaaaaaa. I swear to God, I never had anything with Adeola. Maybe it was her boyfriend that impregnated her.
FUNMI: that is exactly my point Onihaxy. It was her boyfriend and Adeola doesn’t go out with any other guy except you. in fact, she introduced you to everyone as her boyfriend.
ME: haaa. Did you ask her who was responsible for the pregnancy?
FUNMI: yes I did, she told me that it was her boyfriend and she mentioned your name.
ME: I swear to God, this is a false accusation.
FUNMI: ****frowned and looking at me as if she should cut off my head*****
ME: **pleading** I swear to God Funmi. I have nothing to do with Adeola or the pregnancy.
FUNMI: ***** suddenly burst into laughter****** ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
ME: *****surprised and wondering why she is laughing****** what happened Funmi?, why are you laughing?.
FUNMI: ****continued laughing***** I got you Onihaxy.
ME: **still surprised *** got me as how?
FUNMI: just pulling your legs.
ME: pulling my legs?, how?
FUNMI: never mind Onihaxy. I have heard about all the scripts you and Adeola played to make me sad. Thanks so much ehn.
ME: ***took a deep breath**** hmmmmmmmm, and it’s not what you think ooo.
FUNMI: then what is it?, that you allowed yourself to be used by that small girl?, that you were the instrument used by her to make me sad?, despite how I liked you and all I have done for you.
ME: I’m so sorry Funmi.
FUNMI: it’s ok. But why didn’t you tell me about this earlier?
ME: I should have told you but she begged me to play along with her. It was when I realized that she went too far that I decided to talk to her that it’s high time she stopped all the acting and reconcile back to her mother.
FUNMI: yeah, I know. She told me about everything yesterday night, how both of you wanted to frame up pregnancy news to me so that I can commit suicide and then die.
ME: Haba, it has not got up to that now.
FUNMI: All the same, I thank you so much for been the tool used to make me sad and I also thank you for bringing peace back between my daughter and I.
ME: don’t mention.
FUNMI: but please, let the secret she told you about remain between the three of us.
ME: trust me Funmi. You know I can keep a secret.
FUNMI: thanks so much Onihaxy, I owe you a lunch.
We both laughed over it and she dipped her hand into her purse and gave me 2,000 naira to eat lunch that Monday. I thanked her and left her office with smile and laughter on my face. As I was opening her door, the entire “gossip crew” members abandoned what they were doing and focused on me. They looked me right from when I left Funmi’s office till when I got to my desk and I was sure they were wondering “how come he came out of the office smiling?”
It was lunch break time and I was about to go out and have lunch at my usual canteen, I met the two guys from my team who were retained along the walkway, they were also going out on lunch break and they hugged me when they saw me and began to gist as we walked together to the canteen. The first guy thanked me for his nomination and he said he saw my handiwork and how I fought so hard for them to be retained. I just smiled as the second guy also told me that he was so scared and never expected the bank to retain him. I asked him why he was scared and he told me that “Onihaxy, the bank needed just two people from each team, our team housed the most hardworking group during the project and also, Benita your girlfriend was also on ground and awaiting to be retained. If we should remove Benita, there was just one more person to be retained and you expect me not to be scared?”. I laughed out so loud and I was like “ chaii, so these guys have been analyzing things during the project?”.
The first guy then asked me a question, “Onihaxy baba, what happened to Benita?, we all expected her to be retained but she wasn’t. She really made mouth then that her retention was very certain”. I kept mute for some seconds and I replied them saying “An organization that wants to progress need a serious and dedicated staff and that is why they always look out for every hardworking people. Even the senior staffs, they can sleep with any girl in the course of duty. But when it comes to the time for appraisals and promotions, they focus on the hardworking staffs”.
We continued to discuss until we reached the canteen, one of them even paid for my lunch. We got back to the bank and they told me to greet my office madam and I smiled. I got home in the evening and Segun called my second line to ask me if I have heard anything from Adebimpe and I told him that I haven’t heard from her.
The next day at work, Funmi thanked me again for bringing peace back between her daughter and her, Adeola also called to inform me that she and her mother had settled their differences and I was very happy that I was free at last. At the close of business for that day, I was on my way driving back home when I remembered that I haven’t heard from Betty since the last time she called to inform me about her pregnancy, I picked my phone and dialed her number but it wasn’t reachable. Instead, I was told to leave a message and I did. I got home and became worried and curious on why she hadn’t called me since then as several thoughts were going through my mind.
“what could really be happening?”
“why hasn’t she called me back since then?”
“ or could it be that she has heard the news about me?”
“ could it be that Henry has found out about me and decided to tell her sister about it?”
“ or what could make her to be unreachable?”
“ I hope my dream of travelling abroad has not been lost?”
I was still in the mode of thinking when my phone started ringing. I looked at the screen and it was a call from Bimpe, I was so scared to pick it up but the call kept coming in. After the fourth call, I decided to pick up.
ME: hello Aunty Bimpe.
BIMPE: na wa oooo, so is this how life is supposed to be?, don’t even Aunty Bimpe me!!
ME: I am sorry now, I ought to have called you but I don’t know how intense the situation on ground is, and I don’t want to add to the existing trouble.
BIMPE: don’t worry, I understand you Onihaxy. You think I am dead isn’t it?
ME: Haba Bimpe, why will you be talking like this now?, why will I wish you dead?
BIMPE: why won’t you wish me dead?, so that you can enjoy your life with your wife abi?
ME: ok, I’m very sorry. So, how did it go?
BIMPE: it went well.
ME: really?, waooh. Tell me about it.
BIMPE: when I got home, he asked me who the real father of Daniella was and I cried, telling him that I was raped by a patient at my night duty on the same period he came to visit me in Abuja.

ME:***smiled*** really?
BIMPE: yes ofcourse. I don’t know why you are proving stubborn. I have been telling you to let me take you to him but you refused
ME: No thanks. I am fine.
BIMPE: you are on your own oooo.
ME: thank you. so, you mean I am now safe and free?
BIMPE: ofcourse we are free to continue with our affairs.
