Episode 24
After two days of anxious waiting, i got a very wonderful news from Joe who came into my apartment with excitement written all over his face.
âI saw your woman today and believe me, sheâs very okay. She reported to work like you were expecting and i had to wait and follow her after the school closed for the day. I now know her hideoutâ he poured out with excitement, while i quickly got up and shook his hand.
âyou are the man. So tell me, where is she hiding?â i asked curiously,
âsomewhere in Ekenwan, sheâs probably staying with a friendâ he answered.
âgood, letâs go there, letâs go right awayâ i shouted, grabbed my car keys and hurried out of my apartment with him.
I couldnât control my excitement as i drove towards Ekenwan that fateful evening. I was so happy and overly excited.
We soon got to her hideout, a very cool building complex with lots of apartments.
Joe nodded and alighted, i quickly followed him and together we headed into the building, my heart beating furiously. We slowly made our way to the first floor, Joe leading the way and stopping at a door..
âhere is the apartment i saw her enter this afternoonâ he said with a slight nod. I drew forward and knocked on the door without wasting time. I knocked and knocked until a middle aged lady opened up and stared at us with fear.
âwhere is Jenifer?â i barked,
âi donât know any Jeniferâ she answered and tried to shut the door, but i was faster than her. I pushed forward, forcing my way into the sitting room and pushing aside the shocked lady in the process.
âget out nowâ she screamed, but i paid no attention to her because i already had caught glimpse of a lady escaping to one of the rooms as i bolted into the apartment.
I went after the lady, barging into the room without civility and freezing as my eyes feel on the fleeing woman. She was no other person than my Jenifer.
âJeniferâ i breathed.
âget outâ she screamed boldly like a terrified Animal.
âJeniferâ i called out her name again, happiness filling my heart and swelling my soulâŠ.

âJenifer you are going home with me this moment. We are going homeâ i said seriously, watching her keenly.
âiâm not going anywhere with you just leaveâ she cried.
âbaby, the past we canât change, but our future we can shape. Câmon letâs go homeâ i begged softly, drew close and held her hand.
âno you donât understand anything. We canât be happy together. Do you really think you can segregate yourself from your people because of me?. Câmon your feelings will change in no time. Just leaveâ she cried.
Her friend and Joe barged into the room that same moment, interrupting us.
âyou better leave sirâ her friend said angrily.
âiâm not leaving without herâ i answered defiantly.
âlet me beâ Jenifer begged.
âitâs either you leave with me or i stay here with youâ i replied seriously with a drawn face.
âfine letâs go but this is kidnappingâ she finally murmured with resignation.
âyou canât be doing thisâ her friend protested while she shrugged.
âdonât worry dear, thanks for everythingâ she replied, forcing out a smile.
Ten minutes later, we were in my car, speeding back to my house. Joe drove the car, while Jenifer and I sat at the back seat.
âyou were very rude to my friend. Your behaviour was uncalled forâ she complained quietly. I smiled and caressed her palm.
âi had no choice my dear. I was very desperate. Your absence nearly made me madâ i confessed.
âyou donât understand. Iâm a woman. I have only one life to live. I donât want to make a mistake of choosing a wrong life partner. I donât want to spend the rest of my life regretting marrying a wrong person. We are in Africa for Christ sake. Marriage isnât just only between two people here, but equally between your family and mine. Yours wonât accept me and the stigma of Tonyâs issue will forever be there to spoil things. Please understandâ she pleaded desperately.
âyou canât convince me to leave you dear. Yes iâm the bad guy, but i have you to live for. I have only youâ I said seriously, kissing her hand. My phone soon rang, interrupting our discussion.
The caller turned out to be no other person than the same kinsman who paid me a visit somedays back. The same man whose words sent Jenifer fleeing for dear life.
âwe are having a meeting to deliberate on your problems with Tony tomorrow. All the town union members will be there. My house is the venue. Time is 4pmâ he announced, chilling my heart with the information.
I truly wasnât a strong member of the union but it was something like a family gathering which i had no choice than to respect. I knew they all had ganged up against me to side with Tony whose stand i couldnât really figure out. He appeared to be playing the victim game with one hand, striking with the other hand and covering everything up like a saint.
âyou see what iâm talking aboutâ Jenifer slowly said as if she listened to my phone conversation or knew what was in my mindâŠ
