(MY SOULMATE)
“Young lady I just asked you a question. Who are you and what are you doing here?.” Chris asked with seriousness.
“Hahahaha……” Gloria burst into laugher like a mad woman.
“Is this supposed to be funny?. Are you mentally deranged or something?.” Chris asked totally confused.
“What should I do?. I told Comfort that coming here was a bad idea but she wouldn’t listen. Now see what she has caused.” Gloria said within herself.
“Are you going to talk or should I call the security men on you?.” Chris asked folding his arms.
“Security men?. Ahn ahn…no nah…it hasn’t gotten to that. I was just asked to bring this food to you. Or aren’t you Chris?.” Gloria asked forcing a smile.
“So why then were you coming out from my restroom?. I’m sure you know that this is not the door that leads to outside.” Chris said with all seriousness.
“Yeah. Actually, i….i…i….” Gloria stammered not knowing how to tell him that she had gone to ease herself in his restroom.
“Wait a minute. Are you a thief?.” Chris asked.
“Ahhh!. Nooo.” Gloria shouted kneeling before Chris. “I swear with my life I’m not a thief. I was just here to serve your food just like I was told to. Then, I….i…decided to ease myself cause i was really pressed sir. Please forgive my stupidity.” Gloria pleaded with her head bowed in shame.
“Wow!. Really?. It’s your audacity and fearlessness for me. How could you deliberately make use of my restroom without my permission?. Do I even know you from anywhere?. Or are we even close enough to share restrooms together?.” He raged.
“Please sir forgive me. It was a mistake that won’t happen again I promise.” She pleaded with fear in her heart. Thinking of how her parents would react when they find out that she had gone to cause trouble at Ogbuefi’s mansion.
“Hmmmmm. How am I even sure that you didn’t poison my food? Or that it was really you who brought in the food?.” Chris asked not buying her excuses.
“You can ask your mother. She was the one that directed me to your room. And the security men downstairs saw me when I was bringing the food upstairs.” Gloria said.
“If that’s the case, then you have to taste the food which you brought.” Chris said.
“That’s not a problem. Is it not food?. I will taste it.” Gloria said standing on her feet.
She quickly reached for the food and opened it. As soon as she opened it, the savouring aroma of the meal passed through her nostrils. It was too pleasing that she didn’t know when she shouted,
“My goodness!. This smells delicious.” She said out loud forgetting that Chris was there with her.
When she finally remembered that Chris was still standing there, she gently dropped the cover of the plate on the tray and picked the spoon that was by the side. Without any hesitations, she digged the spoon into the sumptuous jellof rice. A taste of the meal made her opened her eyes wide in disbelief. The way she opened her eyes scared Chris that he worriedly asked,
“Are you okay?. Is the food actually poisoned?.” He asked.
“No sir. This is the best meal I have ever had since I was born. My goodness. Is this the kind of meal you enjoy here?. This is so good.” She said shaking her head.
Chris couldn’t help but laughed at her funny reaction. “Do you really enjoy the food?.” He asked smiling at her.
“Sir. I love it. This is tasty and delicious. I can’t even make such a meal.” Gloria said eating more.
“Are you seriously trying to finish the food?.” Chris asked not believing his eyes as Gloria had eaten half of the food already.
“I thought you said…..” Gloria tried to ask with her mouth full of food.
“…you call this tasting?. Is this how you taste food in your place?.” Chris asked snatching the food from her.
“Water sir.” Gloria requested hiccuping.
“Are you being serious right now?.” Chris asked not believing her.
Before he knew it, Gloria took the bottle water which she had brought for him from the tray. And gulped it down. Having gulped the water down her throat, Gloria gave out a thunderous belch of satisfaction.
Chris marvelled in total disbelief. “This is the craziest girl I’ve ever met.” He said.
“Thank you so much sir for the meal. I’ve tasted it. I hope I’m now free to go?.” She asked.
Chris who was dumbfounded, nodded in affirmation.
“Thank you sir.” Gloria said reaching for the door. As soon as she pulled it open she found Vanessa standing before her.
Vanessa was Chris’s childhood friend who had always wanted to be with Chris but he kept turning her down saying she was like a younger sister to him.
“Good evening ma’am.” Gloria greeted Vanessa who pushed her aside and walked into Chris’s room.
“Hia. Oooo. Problem everywhere.” Gloria said to herself as Vanessa pushed her aside.
“Hi pumpkin….!.” Vanessa called out to Chris spreading her arms for a hug.
“Hi Vanessa.” Chris responded embracing her.
“I’m so happy for your return chris. I’ve really missed you a lot.” Vanessa said pressing his cheeks.
“Same here.” Chris said freeing himself from her embrace.
Just then, Vanessa turned to see Gloria still standing by the door staring at them.
“And what the hell are you still doing standing there?.” She yelled rolling her eyes at Gloria who quickly shut the door.
“Why are you being harsh on the poor girl?.” Chris asked.
“Why was she staring at us like that?. Do you two know each other?.” Vanessa asked sitting on the couch that was close to the bed.
“Not really. But she’s a quite a crazy and funny type of girl.” Chris said smiling within himself.
“And what is that supposed to mean?.” Vanessa asked curioused.
“It means nothing Vanessa. That aside. How has life been over here?.” Chris asked trying to change the topic.
“Well, life has been good but definitely not rosy. See as your skin is glowing.” She said standing from her seat.
She went and sat beside Chris rubbing the hair on his left hand.
“And what are you doing?.” Chris asked pulling away from her.
“Come on Chris. For how long do you intend to starve me of your touch and warmth. I really like you and you know it. Its been years since we’ve known each other. And I can beat my chest to say that I know you better than anyone else. Why then do you keep turning down my feelings?.” Vanessa asked licking his ear.
“Stop it Vanessa. I have told you countless times that you are like a younger sister to me. I have tried reciprocating your love but it isn’t working. I can’t imagine having anything to do with you because my conscience won’t let me.” Chris said holding her hands.
“There you go again Chris. How are we even related?. Am i your blood sister?. My name is Vanessa Okagbue and you are Chris Ogbuefi. So tell me, how in God’s name are we related?. We are just friends. Or better still, childhood friends. We grew up together, did everything together and now it’s only proper that we get into a committed relationship together. So I will like you to erase any impression about me being your sister from your head. Cause I’m not your sister and I will never be. I’m not even ready to be sister zoned. I really love you. And just so you know, our parents will be meeting soon to discuss and plan our marriage.” Vanessa said.
But Vanessa, will you be okay spending the rest of your life with a man that doesn’t have any feelings for you?.” Chris asked looking into her eyes.
“As long as that man is you Chris, I can endure it all. I believe with time, your feelings for me will grow too.” She said optimistically.
Just then, they heard a knock at the door.
“Who is there?.” Vanessa asked thinking it was Gloria.
“Excuse me sir, your mother request your presence at the sitting room.” The voice said.
“I guess I have to run along.” Chris said standing to his feet.
“What of your food?.” Vanessa asked.
“Too bad. I would have let her finish the food.” Chris said referring to Gloria.
“Who are you referring to?.” Vanessa asked curioused.
“It’s nothing Vanessa. You can eat it. I’m full already.” Chris lied cause he wouldn’t want to spend another time with Vanessa.
Just as he tried to walk to his wardrobe, he stepped on an earring.
Picking it up, he thought maybe it belonged to the girl (Gloria) from before. Then with a smile, he dipped it into his trouser pocket hoping to give it to Gloria if he by any chance, saw her again.
As Gloria walked back to the noisy crowd where Comfort was already looking for her, she kept jubilating in her heart. Thanking the heavens for saving her from the troubles that she got herself into.
Just then, she received a slap at her back.
“Jesus Christ!.” Gloria shouted turning to see who it was only to discover that it was Comfort.
“Where have you been?. Do you know how worried sick I was looking all over the place for you?. What would I have told your parents if you got missing?.” Comfort yelled in anger.
“Is that why you want to peel out my skin?.” Gloria fired back.
“Where did you go to?.” Comfort asked again.
“I went to ease myself. Didn’t you tell me to go inside?.” Gloria asked
“Go inside?. Why would I do that?. Is this my house?.” Comfort asked totally confused.
“Anyways, the deed has been done. I came, I saw, and I conquered. Now its time to go home.” Gloria said.
“Wait a minute. Gloria where is my mother’s earring?.” Comfort asked touching her empty ear.
“What do you mean by where is your mother’s earring?. It’s right here on my…..” Gloria said touching her ears only to discover that one ear was empty.
“What have you done?. My mom will be making use of it tomorrow morning. What am I going to tell her?. Cause she warned me never to misplace it when I begged her to give them to me.” Comfort lamented.
“Ahhh!. Comfort I have done it again.” Gloria lamented with her hands placed on her head.
“What are you talking about?.” Comfort asked totally confused.
“I guess i must have lost it in Chris’s room oooo.” Gloria shouted.
“Chris room?. Who is Chris?.” Comfort asked.
“Ogbuefi’s only son.” Gloria revealed.
“Hahahaha…you are quite funny. How on earth will you lose your earring in the room of Ogbuefi’s son?. Please tell me something else.” Comfort said waving it off.
“I’m deadly Serious. You know what?. Just wait here while I go back there to get the earring. And i think I have a better idea.” Gloria said.
Before Comfort could say a word, Gloria had ran off to the backyard.
“Is this girl drunk?.” Comfort wondered.
Sneaking her way into the building, Gloria stood before the security men and said,
“I was asked to come get the plates from Chris’s room.” She said.
Since they recognized her, they granted her passage and she hurried off to Chris’s room. When she got to the door, she knocked but as usual, the door was unlocked. So she pushed it open and tip toed inside the room.
Now inside the room, she bent down and started searching for the earring but it was no where to be found. She looked almost everywhere for it but she still couldn’t find it. And unfortunately, Vanessa stepped in and caught her searching the floor.
“What in God’s name is going on here?.” Vanessa asked dropping her bag on the bed.
“I’m sorry ma’am. I am looking for my earring. I think I lost it when I came to serve Chris his food.” Gloria said standing to her feet.
“Hold your cheap and flimsy excuses to yourself bitch. I caught you raiding Chris’s room just now. I honestly do not know why my spirit doesn’t align with yours. I hardly hate people. But I’m forced to hate you. So if you don’t want me to call security on you, then you must bring out everything you’ve stolen from this room. Don’t even try to deny it cause I caught you red handed.” Vanessa said clapping her hands.
“I swear ma’am. I’m not a thief. I am only here to look for my lost earring nothing more.” Gloria said with tears in her eyes.
“Are you still giving me excuses?. If I slap……” Vanessa said raising her hand to slap Gloria who shut her eyes turning her face away thinking she was about to get slapped.
But after a while, she opened her eyes only to see Chris holding Vanessa’s hand up in the air.
“Let go of me Chris. She is a thief.” Vanessa said struggling to free her hand from Chris’s grip but Chris held her firmly and said,
“I know her Vanessa. She’s not a thief.” Chris said letting go of her hand.
Gloria was still confused on what to do next when Chris grabbed her by the wrist and took her outside with him leaving Vanessa in outermost surprise.
