SISTER ADURAGBEMI
Part 5

“Adura, God has done it for us again. He has done it.” Her sister said, jumping up for Joy.
The impatient Adura couldn’t wait for the good news to be shared, but her sister was busy jumping up for joy. She fell on her knees and clasped her fingers together, shouting” thank you Jesus”.
Adura was running out of impatience.
“Won’t you tell me the good news?” She shouted all of a sudden. She would have walked down to where her sister was to give her a dirty slap for keeping her waiting for what looks like eternity to share the good news.
“Miss Aduragbemi, I am glad to announce to you that…” She paused and suddenly let out a smile that revealed her well arranged set of teeth that were as white as a snow.
Anger grew up from Adura’s stomach.
“I’m sorry, dear sister. I don’t just know how to divulge the information. I am sure you will be happy. God has really answered our prayers.” Her sister said, trying to read the expression on Adura’s face.
“Will you stop beating around the bush? What is your problem? If you know you are not ready to share the good news with me, please let me know so that my time won’t be wasted.” she yelled.
Her sister knew she had pushed Adura to the wall.
“I’m so sorry. The good news is that we have been offered admission to study our dream courses in the University of Lagos.”She announced joyfully, expecting her sister to be joyful as well.
For some minutes, Adura didn’t utter a word. But millions of thoughts ran through her mind.
Adura’s face fell.
Her sister, Sade, had mixed feelings.
She detests seeing her sister being sad.
“What have I done wrong? I thought the news will lighten her countenance. I thought she was going to happy.” She thought.
Adura didn’t utter a word.
Her sister decided to let her be. She went straight to her room to have some rest.
The moment her body touched the soft bed in her room, she zoomed off. She was still enjoying her sweet sleep when her phone buzzed.
“Ohhhhh!!! Who is this person calling me when the sleep is becoming sweeter.” she asked no one in particular as she rubbed her face while she sluggishly reached out for her phone on the table.
“Hello, report to the cyber cafe now for the necessary registrations you need to make to fully secure your admission. Come along with your sister.” the caller said.
Sade changed into a yellow gown, rushed down to the sitting room to meet her sister.
On getting to the sitting room, she heard someone crying.
Her heart plummeted into her stomach.
She rushed down to where Adura was.
“Adura, why are you crying? Did I offend you? What have I done wrong.” Her sister asked, trying to know if she had offended her.
Adura couldn’t stop crying. In fact, the sight of her sister opened the tank of tears she had been holding for long.
Her sister’s heart fainted.
” Why are you crying?” She asked as she wrapped her hands on Adura’s neck.
“Sade, I won’t accept the admission. I won’t be following you to University of Lagos.” Adura announced.
“Why? What suddenly happened to you? What has suddenly come over you? You must be joking. In fact, you must follow me to Emmanuella cyber Cafe, now.” She shouted.
“You are stu.pid. Am I the one you are shouting at? Am I not your elder sister? The fact that I’m on wheels doesn’t mean you should disrespect me. You hear me? Let that sink into your disgusting brain…” Adura yelled back.
Her sister was running out of patience.
” So, the fact that you are the eldest means you should be as foo.lish as a sheep. Imagine! You want to reject admission. Admission you have been waiting for, for years. You are foo.lish my dear. I hate nonsense.” She said as she hissed so loud as a snake.
Adure didn’t say anything.
Many thoughts were playing on her mind.
It wasn’t as if she wasn’t interested in being an undergraduate. But, the thought of going to classes on her wheel chair made fear and anxiety etch on her face.
“God, if only a miracle can happen.” she cried out.
Sade looked at her as if she was a piece of rag, uttering some words that weren’t audible enough. After some minutes, she went straight to the cafe.
Her sister’s actions that day broke Adura apart.
But her sister was one of her greatest motivators . Why would she react like that?
Fear ran through her spine when she had a feeling that her sister would continue to treat her forever like that. If the feeling is right, then she is doomed.
“God just a miracle is all I pray for.”She cried.
****FLASHBACK
Joy knew no bound when a little girl was welcomed into the family of Mr. and Mrs. Akinpelu.
Her first cry in the hospital caused many to jubilate. It caused songs like “what God cannot do does not exist, capable God, God of possibilities… ” to come down from people’s mouths.
Having married joyfully as many couples do, they encounted a problem.
Mrs. Akinpelu was not a promiscuous lady in her youthful age not to talk of being engaged in series of abortions which might have destroyed her womb. She married as a virgin.
First year in marriage, no sound of a child in their family. The couples weren’t bothered.
“At the appointed time, children will come forth.” They concluded.
Despite the fact that children weren’t on ground, their love for each other waxed strong. They couldn’t do without each other. They were just too fond of each other.
When their marriage clicked 3 years, Mr. Akinpelu’s mother rose up.
” I give you three months to become pregnant. If you fail to take in, my son will marry another person. You this good for nothing prostitute who cast a spell on my son to marry you.” She said that afternoon she visited.
Her world came crumbling when she heard ” prostitute!”
All through her youthful age, she had been serving God.
Why would God punish her with barreness?
She narrated her experience with her mother-in-law to her husband.
Her husband warned his mother sternly.
Her mother packed her loads and left, waiting patiently for that time her daughter-in-law would be mocked.
4 years into the marriage, her mother-in-law rose up again with her “give me grandchildren, or you leave my son’s house.” His son checked her.
5th year, she rose up again, using diabolical means to eliminate her, but God came through for her.
God silenced her mother-in-law.
After 6 years, God heard their prayers. He gave them a bouncing baby girl.
But…..
To be continued.
