SWITCH AT BIRTH
EPISODE 6
The queen attempted to call Ada for a month, but her efforts were met with silence. Frustrated and concerned, she reached out to Sarah, inquiring about Ada’s well-being. Sarah’s response was cryptic, “Ada is more like your daughter than mine; she’s at school.”
Determined to reconnect with Ada, the queen decided to pay her an unexpected visit at school. However, upon arrival, she discovered that Ada was nowhere to be found in her hostel. After inquiring from Ada’s classmates, she was directed to a secluded walkway where Ada and Obinna often studied together.
As the queen approached the walkway, she was met with the sight of Ada and Obinna laughing and conversing animatedly. Her insecurities resurfaced, and she thought to herself, “Ada has moved on to another boy.
The queen, still observing Ada and Obinna from a distance, pulled out her phone and dialed Onyeka’s number.
“Onyeka, I need you to come meet me in your campus immediately,” she said, her voice low and urgent.
“Onyeka replied, “Mom, wow, you’re in campus…”
“Yes, don’t ask me any more questions,” the queen interrupted. “Follow the description I will be giving you.”
“I want you to come to the walkway near the old oak tree,” she continued. “It’s surrounded by trees and has a bench at the end. That’s where I am. Come quickly, and don’t take long.”
“I’m coming right away,” Onyeka replied. “I’m close to this place.”
Obinna, noticing a stray strand of hair on Ada’s face, gently attempted to remove it, when the queen intervened, her voice booming from a distance…
“Young man, stop that!” the queen shouted, her voice echoing through the walkway. “How dare you touch her face? She is my future daughter-in-law, and you will not lay hands on her!”
Obinna was shocked by the queen’s outburst. Ada, noticing her godmother’s anger, quickly ran to hug her. “Mom, how are you?” she asked, trying to diffuse the situation.
The queen hugged her back, but soon began shouting at her. “Why haven’t you been picking my calls? Why are you making me worry?”
Obinna, feeling awkward, jumped into the conversation. “Good day, ma,” he said, addressing the queen. “Ada, is she your mother?”
Ada replied, “Yes, my godmother.”
Queen Chioma quickly told Ada to answer her questions. Just then, Prince Onyeka appeared out of nowhere and greeted the queen.
After a brief conversation between the queen and her son, she asked Ada to answer her questions. Ada quickly replied, saying she had stopped taking the queen’s calls because she didn’t want anything to do with Onyeka or the palace anymore.
Onyeka responded sarcastically, “Who even wants to have anything to do with a pest like you?”
Queen Chioma interrupted him, telling him to keep qu!et. She turned to Ada and said, “I’m sorry about whatever happened, but I see you as my child, and I want to always have you around. That’s why I want you and Onyeka to get along.”
Ada replied, “I understand, mom, but I can’t. I’m sorry.”
She quickly grabbed Obinna’s arm and tried to leave the queen’s presence, but the queen asked her to stop. “Are you walking out on me because of this boy?” she asked, her voice stern.
She turned to Obinna and warned him, “Stay away from Ada. If I see you close to her again, you won’t like what I’ll do to you and your entire generation.”
Before Obinna could respond, the queen shut him up, and he left Ada’s side. Ada turned to the queen and said, “I and Obinna are just friends. Besides, I don’t want to have anything to do with Onyeka. I’m sorry, mom.”
With that, she angrily ran off towards Obinna, leaving the queen and Onyeka behind.
The queen’s face turned red with anger as she watched Ada run off with Obinna. She turned to Onyeka, her eyes blazing with fury. “This is all your fault!” she spat. “You and your careless words! Now she’s gone and I fear she may never come back!”
Onyeka shrugged, his expression unrepentant. “I merely spoke the truth, Mother. She’s a pest and a nu!sance. We’re better off without her.”
The queen’s eyes narrowed, her voice cold and menacing. “You will regret those words, Onyeka. Mark my words.
Many months had passed, and Ada’s behavior showed no signs of improvement. Queen Chioma, convinced that Ada’s closeness to Obinna was the root of the problem, decided to take drastic measures. She hired spies to gather intelligence on Obinna, determined to uncover his weaknesses.
The spies reported back to the queen, revealing that Obinna had financial struggles. They had discovered that he was the son of a single mother, living in a state in the north, and had been jobless since graduating. The queen believed that offering him a substantial sum of money would persuade him to distance himself from Ada.
With this information, the queen and her guards set out on a journey to Obinna’s state in the north, arriving late at night. The next day, they stormed Obinna’s residence, catching him off guard outside his home.
Obinna, recognizing the queen from their previous encounter at school, greeted her respectfully. However, the queen was unfazed, responding curtly, “Keep your greetings to yourself.”
She instructed her guards to hand Obinna a bag filled with money, saying, “This should be enough to help you establish yourself in life. Stay away from Ada. I can do anything for her sake.”
Obinna, unwavering, replied, “Ma’am, please take your money and leave.”
Just then, Nneoma, Obinna’s mother, emerged from the kitchen, drawn by the commotion outside. Her face met the queen.
