30 Days in The Brothel Episode Nine

Ndu cannot wait to see his wife face to face again. But he was also afraid that his wife could be in for big trouble if it was true that she connived with the pastor to defraud him. The pastor has already made some confessional statements to the police and Kate was implicated. Ndu never knew that his wife would have the mind of dealing with him the way she did. He was shocked when he heard that his wife was at a brothel. All along, he was thinking she was kidnapped.

โ€œWhat took her there?โ€ Ndu asked himself. The drive to the brothel was tense. He sat in the police vehicle, his hands trembling slightly. He was not sure how he would feel when he finally saw Kate. Would he be furious? Would he break down in tears? He had spent weeks believing she was in danger, running around to save her, only to find out she had conspired against him. There were many things the pastor did not say, but from what he said, Kate was in agreement that they should defraud him.

The police officers in the van remained focused. Their leader, Inspector James, looded at Ndu and gave him a reassuring nod. “You have done the right thing. Betrayal is painful, but justice must be served. We are by your side to ensure you get the justice you deserve. I know you love your wife but it is the ones we love that betray us the most sometimes. Be strong. You are a man.โ€ The policeman said.

When they arrived at the brothel, loud music blared from within. The officers stepped out swiftly. Their presence immediately drew attention. Some of the women loitering around the entrance ran inside upon seeing the police, fearing trouble. A brothel manager, a middle-aged woman with heavy makeup, approached them cautiously.

“Good evening, officers. How can I help you?” she asked, forcing a smile. She was very scared as she never expected to see policemen at the facility.

“We are here to arrest Kate,” Inspector James said firmly. “Where is she?”

The womanโ€™s eyes were filled with fear. “Kate? Sheโ€”sheโ€™s inside. Room 12. Please, donโ€™t cause trouble.”

Without another word, the officers moved in. Ndu followed closely behind them. His heart was p******g heavily like motar. They navigated the narrow corridors until they reached Room 12. Inspector James knocked hard on the door. “Police! Open up!” He shouted.

There was a moment of silence, then a shuffle from within. “Who is it?” Kateโ€™s hesitant voice called out.

“Open this door immediately! You are under arrest!” the officer commanded.
Kate panicked. She had been lying low since the pastor disappeared, fearing the worst. She knew deep down that things had gone terribly wrong. Kate was trembling as she slowly turned the knob and opened the door just a crack. But the moment she saw the police standing before her and then her husband, Ndu, standing right behind them she let out a piercing scream. Her legs gave way, and she collapsed on the floor.

“Kate!” Ndu shouted emotionally. He wanted answers, but he was also shocked to see her like this. Two officers rushed in and lifted her onto the bed. One of them checked her pulse. “Sheโ€™s conscious, just in shock. She needs to get up now.” The policeman said.

Kateโ€™s eyes finally opened, and when she saw the handcuffs in the officerโ€™s hands, she burst into tears. “Please, pleaseโ€ฆ I can explain! It wasnโ€™t my fault! The pastor deceived me to do it. He convinced me to defraud my husband. I did not get any Kobo from the money we collected!” she said tearfully.

Ndu stepped forward, his voice heavy with pain. “You betrayed me, Kate. Do you know what Iโ€™ve been through because of you? I sold everything! I was ready to die just to save you! And all this time, you were part of it? Iโ€™m so disappointed!โ€ Ndu shouted.

Kate sobbed uncontrollably, shaking her head. “I was stupid! I thought I was going to get something out of it! The pastor promised me that we would share the money, but he took everything and abandoned me here! He used me! Please, Ndu, believe me!”

Inspector James didnโ€™t have time for her excuses. He motioned for the officers to proceed. “Enough talking. Arrest her.”

The officers pulled Kate up and locked the handcuffs around her wrists. She cried even louder. “Please! Please! I have nowhere to go! I regret everything!” But there was no sympathy left for her. The officers dragged her out of the room and led her through the brothelโ€™s hallways. The other women and workers peeked out from their rooms, whispering amongst themselves. Some shook their heads, while others watched in silence.

As they reached the police van, Kate turned to Ndu one last time, her eyes pleading. “Ndu, I know I hurt you, but pleaseโ€ฆ please donโ€™t let me rot in prison.”
Ndu kept silent. He had nothing left to say to her. He watched in silence as the officers pushed her into the van and shut the door. The drive to the police station was quiet. Kate sat in the back, sniffling, knowing that her fate was sealed. The pastor had already been caught, and now she was in police custody as well. She had played a dangerous game, and now she was paying the price.
When they arrived at the station, the officers booked her in and took her to a holding cell. She sank onto the hard bench, staring blankly at the cold walls. She had lost everythingโ€”her husband, her freedom, and the future she thought she could have with the pastorโ€™s money.
Inspector James turned to Ndu. “She will be charged along with the pastor. You did well to bring this to our attention. We will ensure justice is served.”
Ndu nodded, but his heart was heavy. He had loved Kate deeply, despite everything. But now, all he felt was betrayal and exhaustion. He demanded to enter the cell and have one last word with Kate. His demand was granted and the cell was opened for him.

โ€œWhy did you do it? I mean, what happened? Were you kidnapped or you left the house on your own?โ€ Ndu asked his wife.
